About the surgeon
Professor Iakiv Fishchenko is a Doctor of Medical Sciences, a spine surgeon, an orthopaedic trauma surgeon and a neurosurgeon. He works in the department of spine surgery with the spinal centre at the Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics of the NAMS of Ukraine. One of the main areas of his clinical work is the surgical treatment of scoliosis with the ASC technique in adolescents and adults.
Personal ASC experience
Prof. Iakiv Fishchenko has been performing ASC surgery personally since 2021. Over that period he has carried out more than 150 ASC operations together with a dedicated surgical team.

What ASC is
ASC is a method of surgical treatment for scoliosis without planned fusion of the vertebrae. Anchors are placed in the vertebral bodies through an anterolateral approach and connected with a flexible cord. This corrects the deformity while preserving spinal mobility to a far greater extent than fusion does. Suitability for ASC and the expected degree of correction are determined individually.
Who may be a candidate for ASC
The technique may be considered in carefully selected adolescents and adults with a flexible deformity that requires surgical treatment. The assessment takes into account:
- curve type and the Cobb angle;
- curve flexibility and trunk balance;
- skeletal maturity and bone quality;
- previous surgery and general health.
ASC is not a universal replacement for every other spinal operation.
Individual planning
Planning starts with an assessment of standing radiographs. Where necessary the surgeon requests bending films, MRI, CT and other investigations.
Prof. Iakiv Fishchenko personally assesses whether ASC is applicable and explains the alternatives, the expected degree of correction and the potential risks.
